A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen people were hurt in an apparently intentional gas explosion at a country home in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters approached the property in the vicinity of the city of Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who fled subsequent to the explosion was located not long after. The trio have been taken to medical facility.

The explosion could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the location showed the structure left as a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the past.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the property was subject to an court order due to debts accrued by the property owners.

Mediators had been sent to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the residents caused the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Commander Papagno informed the media.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the detonation directly hit our personnel,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also found at the site, the interior minister said.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the blast included 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of the state police and a firefighter.

According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The official was convinced the explosion had taken place on a floor above the entrance and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the blast, he said officers had “detected a whistling noise, probably the propane tanks being opened”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents informed Italian media, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto united with other government officials in commemorating the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
