Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Comments

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, reacting to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the NFL determined that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Recent Exchange

The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made comments after the Broncos' historic comeback win over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Moreover, Payton implied that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton stated.

Background of the Wilson-Payton Relationship

  • The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M contract.
  • The Broncos finished 4-11 in his debut year prior to Denver hired Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in TV commentary.
  • Payton benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.

If Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, marking the contentious split between the quarterback and his coach.
